LOOKNorth becomes member of Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance
Group working to drive improved environmental performance in Canada's oil sands
As part of its effort to keep abreast of resource industries’ monitoring needs and priorities and to share information on the remote sensing technologies that can address them, LOOKNorth has joined Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA) as an Associate Member.
COSIA is an alliance of oil sands producers focused on accelerating the pace of improvement in environmental performance in Canada's oil sands through collaboration and innovation. Through COSIA, participating companies capture, develop and share the most innovative approaches and best thinking in four Environmental Priority Areas (EPAs): tailings, water, land and greenhouse gases.
The alliance’s 13 members, which represent almost 90 per cent of the oil sands production in Canada, share experience and intellectual property in a manner that values and protects corporate technologies, but allows other COSIA members to apply and build on innovations shared. To date, COSIA member companies have shared 777 distinct technologies and innovations that cost over $950 million to develop. These numbers are increasing as the alliance matures and expands.
COSIA also brings together leading thinkers from industry, government, academia, aboriginal communities and the wider public to help advance innovation and environmental performance. Organizations and individuals who share COSIA's vision can join COSIA as Associate Members. As an Associate Member, LOOKNorth brings to COSIA extensive knowledge and expertise in existing and emerging remote sensing/monitoring technologies that can help improve environmental performance.
“We are pleased to welcome LOOKNorth to COSIA’s Associate Membership program,” says Pej Ghanipour, Head, Associate Membership Program. “They represent a large network of innovators, which have the potential to be a great resource for our members as we strive to accelerate the pace of environmental performance improvement in Canada’s oil sands through collaboration and innovation.”
“Associate Membership in COSIA is a good fit for us,” says LOOKNorth Executive Director Bill Jefferies. “LOOKNorth’s mandate to foster remote sensing innovation to support safe and sustainable development of Canada’s northern natural resources is well aligned with COSIA’s vision to enable responsible and sustainable growth of Canada’s oil sands while delivering accelerated improvement in environmental performance through collaborative action and innovation.”
